Clutch @ Crocodile Rock 12-30-2012

Maryland rock band Clutch performed at The Crocodile Rock in PA on December 30th, 2012. The PA fans had an infusion of NJ blood as well since the Starland Ballroom show had been canceled due to damage from Hurricane Sandy.

Guitarist Tim Sult had this to say about the show; "It's kind of sad that the Starland is closed down for the rest of the year, but honestly, I consider Allentown to be west NJ-maybe it's not physically in Jersey but spiritually, it's nj all the way."

Ataco, San Salvador Wedding Session

Check out Alejandro & Regina's day after session today in Ataco, San Salvador. We had a great time walking around the town and finding cool spots to make pictures. All the walls and crafts you see are hand painted by the locals who were very welcoming and helpful. When some military soldiers came by to see what was going on....we incorporated them into the session. Enjoy!

This is a question I get often during the year. The answer is, Yes, I do! I really like Sweet 16s, except for when I realize that my daughter, who is 4 as I write this, will one day be the girl wearing the poofy dress and dancing with...me. I go home and hug her tightly and remind her that she'll never stop being a little girl to ome. For that reason, I find it an honor to be chosen to capture this special moment in a family's life. It's a big responsibility and one I don't take lightly.

Ralph Lauren Baby Liam Holiday Photo Session

I don't photograph alot of babies, but when I do they are awesome! Liam turned 6 months old and it was time for his big moment in front of the camera. I think he did awesome! He smiled and giggled and really hammed it up when the time arose. His parents, Humberto & Lorena, who own Lorena's Restaurant were great hosts allowing me into their home to capture the special moments and they kept Liam smiling and laughing. He was dressed head to toe in Ralph Lauren and wore it quite well.

Those of you Photogs with kids can appreciate how hard it is to get them to take a normal picture for you. I bribed Alexa with sugary treats of deliciousness for this image. I didn't want a smile and she delivered. Daddy loves you very much muñeca!

This is the last of the Sigma 35 f/1.4 sample pics before my review. I have an event this weekend and will put it through some low light testing. Keep an eye out for my review next week.

Here's an image taken of the side of Rockefeller Center building. It was a foggy evening and I really dug how the fog and smoke from the building was rising and giving it a dark Gotham City feel while Christmas lights in the foreground add juxtaposition.

Katherine & Chris {Engaged - Rutgers Gardens, NJ}

Katherine & Chris had their E-Session the day before "Sandy" came to NJ. We had already rescheduled twice because of time conflicts and weather we weren't sure what the storm would bring so we had to make it happen. Luckily, they were both gamers and we rocked Rutgers Gardens!

It was a little bit cloudy...

It didn't matter though because Katherine's vivacious personality lit up the morning.

Chris was more the calm and collected type. They really compliment each other well.

Katherine & Chris have known each other since grammar school, have been dating since high school and are getting married on their 10 year anniversary. Great touch! They enjoy going going to Red Bull Soccer games, hanging out with friends and family, drinking wine and watch movies and tv shows...not sure if they're into Zombies or not. I"ll find out next time we meet. :)

Chris knows that every man should fan is Queen with large leaves.

Anthony's Surprise Proposal to Raechel in Sinatra Park Hoboken, NJ

I was contacted by Anthony's sister about his plan to propose to Raechel. She asked me if I thought it was a good idea to photograph it...my answer was of course; "Heck freakin' yeah it is!" I spoke with Anthony and he was game and impressively prepared. He had made a photo book of their time together complete with an image of the ring on the back cover to initiate the proposal. We devised a plan to put me close to the action. Here it goes...

I asked Anthony to meet me at Sinatra Park where the first met and walk near me while I was pretending to talk to a client. When they got close I hung up and asked them if I could take a quick picture of them to test my exposure while my couple arrived. He agreed and Raechel thought I was a freak. jaja

Anthony then proceeded to take a book out of my bag and hand it to her to look through. It contained images from their time together. Cool stuff! Since Raechel knew I was there waiting for a "client" I was now able to float around and grab the moments. Still a weirdo though I was later told.

The last page is reached and the ring comes out. The back cover is a picture of the ring and now it's on her finger...

Photogs live for this kind of emotion. We normally don't get a chance to be here.

Yes, that really just happened...
Let's go have some fun.

DId I mention it had just poured buckets and we waited it out to make sure we got the shoot in? We had to get some reflections in there.

Jessica & Andy were married on Memorial Day Weekend. Seems like yesterday when they came to meet with me but it was back in 2010! Yes, Jess planned early and their day reflected it. Their Ceremony was at Our Lady of Grace Church in Fairview, NJ. The reception was at the newly renovated Fiesta in Woodridge, NJ. The bridal party and family members had tons of energy. Don & Mistica's Absolutely Awesome Wedding!

Don & Mistica are a funny and vibrant couple who had their wedding ceremony @ Mindowaskin Park in Westfield, NJ. It was a great ceremony attended by family and close friends. The reception was held @ The Westwood in Garwood, NJ. Flowers by the Westwood provided the color in the reception.

Sherine & Robert's Wedding @ The Merion

Current workflow and file Back Up System

The glitz and glamour of covering Weddings and Events is exciting and delivers a great rush the day of...but after the cake has been eaten, the whiskey has been drunk and the thunderous DJ bass booms have gone quiet all that's left is the Photog and his full CF memory cards. What happens next is just as important as the moment you compose the frame and press the shutter. File management and more importantly the back up of the files can be pretty complex and expensive, but more on that later. I have read a lot of articles online and adopted a pretty simple straightforward system which has worked for me for the past 2 seasons. Thanks to all the folks who shared their knowledge online and I hope this post can help someone out there.

I currently cover between 50-60 jobs a year so I haven't needed a bigger setup than this. However, I think after this season I've outgrown it and have already found some solutions that will work when I update. This is a general and quick overview of what I use and what I do. I will make a more detailed breakdown if the masses request it :^D.

Here are some images of the enclosure when closed.

Here's the enclosure open with 2 drives from 2011 that I removed. I installed new drives for 2012. Notice the Firewire 800 port. They don't seem to make this anymore. Weird. It's pretty fast but after this season I'm going Thunderbolt.

The EZ-Dock 2 will house 2010 & 2011 drives. Their backup drives are already stored away and the files are all backup to cloud storage in case I lose both drives. This drive is USB 2.0. It's slower than FW800 but it's not my main working drive so it's OK.

I used to use this drive before I got the 2. I've regulated this one to 2.5" backup duty.

I picked up this nifty little NewerTech Storadrive Case from OWC. Pretty neat for keeping things organized on your desk.

I use the WD My Book Live to back up my iMac w/ Time Machine. I set it up once and never touched it again. I got it because it's Ethernet connected and it's easy to transfer files from PC to Mac. I've ditched the PC though so now it's just a backup drive. It's cool because it backs up my main iMac drive and the space matches but I don't like that you can't partition the drive. I also backup my iMac to a cloud.

Here's the full setup behind my iMac. Yes, there's 6 drives in total. The main drives are the most important to me now. I've gradually grown into this system but by the end of this year I'm getting a 6 Bay Thunderbolt Tower to house all the drives in 1 spot. They won't be RAID, they'll work as JBOD and 3 will mirror each other.

Looks kinda messy back there but the new iMac's keep everything neat in front. I can't wait until there are drives with no wires.

So, here's the system I use after I get home from a gig.

The first thing I do is import the files from the cards to my external working drive labeled JPix 2012. In order to do this I use PhotoMechanic because it's FAST! I shoot in RAW so this is very important for me. The faster cards and reader help out.
I then cull the images in PM and delete the ones that didn't make it. This is BY FAR the best feature for me in PM. I zip through 1500-2000 images and don't wait for any images to render. It's awesome! Saves tons of time.
I do another quick cull and then highlight all the images and drag them into LR4.
LR4 opens and I choose Add to Catalogue because the files are already in my main drive. No need to reimport. LR4 will then generate previews from the files. This is very quick. Saves much time from importing within LR4.
Once I have the files in LR4. I open Carbon Copy Cloner and copy the files from my Main Drive to a Backup Drive labeled JPix 2012(Backup) It basically mirrors the main drive.
As CCC does it's thing I begin making Global Adjustments & edits to the files in LR4. I try very hard to get it right in camera so I don't have to make wild time consuming edits in Post. This is just making sure all the exposures and WB match.
Once that's done, I export all the basic edited files to Jpeg and upload them to Zenfolio for backup #3. Yeah, it's not the RAW files but I have 2 copies and like I said, I try to get it correct in camera so I don't really need them after the initial edit. That's just me. Feel free to upload 40-50GB of Data for backup if you'd like.
I then create galleries for the client to view and from there they choose their favorite images for the Album or products. Zenfolio will take their selection and export me a file which LR4 can read and show me their selections in a collection. I can then edit those RAW files further and make them print ready.
During this whole process Time Machine is making backups of my iMac so if I ever have a drive failure, I just put in a new one and I'm up and running again after Time Machine restores my system to the way it was before the crash. Luckily I've never had to do this but you can bet it will happen, all drives fail at some point.

I think that's pretty much it. I could go into further detail but that's a story for another day. As I said so far it's worked well and the combination of my backup drives and Zenfolio have already recovered some files for me. I'm anxious and curious to see how the Thunderbolt drives will work. I'm reading their gonna be super fast which means image rendering and transfers will be faster. Speed = time & we know that time = money and sanity in in this world.

Jose & Joyce's E-Session {Part 1}

I met Jose 2 years ago when he called to ask if I could take some promo images for an upcoming show. He's a classically trained bass player who can also rock it out. You can check out a review of his CD here. Jose called me a few months ago and told me he was engaged. Enter Joyce who plays the viola in an orchestra. Yowza! She is stunning and talented. Do you sense a child prodigy in the making? I do! So here we have these very gifted musicians who wanted a snowy Winter E-Session shoot. The weather this year has been less than normal as you know. We haven't had much snow this winter so we chose the coldest day in December and went to Hoboken to grab some frames with NYC as a backdrop. They brought along their instruments and played some warming notes while we waited for the sun to set. Unfortunately, there was no snow, but it sure was cold. Nevertheless, they trooped it out and we had a great session...

Jessica & Andy’s Engagement Session

After a short hiatus, I have returned to post a flurry of events then “POOF” disappear again like a virgin on prom night… quick! What movie was that line from??

I recall that Jessica called me almost 2 years before her wedding and asked if she was calling to early. I lied and said, “No”. :^) Jessica and Andy stopped in my studio and we had a great, relaxed meeting. We touched on many topics besides their big day. I was super psyched when I got the call that I was their choice! They are a laid back, down to earth couple who are going to be so easy to work with and evoke that desire to go above and beyond your normal service.

Two years seems like a long time to wait but flash (Ahhahh savior of the universe) forward a year and it’s time for their engagement shoot. Andy courted Jessica @ Montclair State University and won her over with his dashing good looks and dream blue eyes (check the images…dreamy) so it was there that the photo session would take place. We walked around campus while snapping some images and talked about how cool Andy was & how lucky Jessica is…or was it the other way around? How about both are true. Here are some images from the evening…

Now, for you photog blog stalkers out there, I know what you’re thinking…Damn, that’s some sweet light. Yes, we had a nice overcast day which yielded clean ambient light. Fill & accent light was triggered via Pocket Wizards Flex System. They are a pretty awesome system. Much gratitude goes out to Josh Lynn & Neil van Niekerk for their assistance in my growth as a photog. A special thanks goes out to my lighting assistant Michelle Edgerton this day & Point Break for that awesome line.

Rain or Storm the shoot must go on! (Dan & Ana’s Day After Portraits)

I posted some images of Dan & Ana’s Wedding a week back and mentioned their awesome day after beach shoot. Well here it is! We had to postpone once because of rain but that didn’t stop us from trooping out in a small tropical storm on our last day in Mexico. We planned to capture some great images with the sunrise but due to the storm and overcast skies we just managed to get some incredible sunriseless images. It actually worked out better because we had a giant softbox giving Dan & Ana wonderfully even, clean light. Check out what I mean here…

Cliffside Park Rec. Wrestling Tournament 2011

I love to capture sports! There’s so much more raw emotion in sports that it’s a nice change from Weddings or Events. Football mainly but because Football season is during Wedding season, I only made it out to a few games last season. When I was asked to cover CP Rec’s Wrestling Tournament again this year, I was excited. However when I got there I kept looking at these little kids and envisioning my son Zackery, who is 4 1/2 as I write this. My wife and I already agree that we don’t want him to play football, even though (Al Bundy moment coming) I played H.S. Football and threw 4 Touchdowns in one game and hold the school record for most TD’s in a season. You’d figure I’d want him to follow in my footsteps. That’s a big negative! I want him to use his head for thinking and school but I can already see that he likes physical contact, like his dad, and will most likely want to play… oh well.

Anyway, back to wrestling, I see these kids grabbing and throwing each other all over the mat and I wonder if Zack would like to participate. I also wonder how I’ll react to watching him pummel kids or get pummeled. Watching matches through a viewfinder gives me/you a deeper sense of what it takes to put on a tight onesie and trot out there and grapple with another human. Some of the kids look happy, some scared, but a rare 1-2 looked very intense & aware of what they were doing. Those are the kids that will go to States and whoop some butt! I’m not sure the real reason that parents let there kids wrestle. I think I’m going to do a survey @ the next match.

San Salvador Trip captured on iPhone4

Greeting folks, today’s post will be about my why you should trust your iPhone to capture your vacation memories & why/when you shouldn’t. In case you didn’t know, DSLR cameras are heavy! Well, maybe not little point & shoots but my cameras are big and heavy. I used to carry them around everywhere I went, but that novelty wore of pretty quickly. I now try to use my DSLR bodies as little as possible. I’ve had quite a few point & shoots over the years with mixed results. My latest camera got pummeled into submission by my kids and I am reluctant to buy another one until they’re a bit older. However, the underlining reason for not getting another one is that I carry a pretty darn good camera on my person @ all times. It’s my phone! The cameras in our phones have come a long way, yes, even you Blackberry Boy. They’ve gotten so good that I almost see no need in getting another point & shoot, but we’re not there just yet…

I needed to go to El Salvador this past November on a family emergency. I stayed in San Salvador, the capital, with my cousin and his family. I was about to buy a camera @ the airport because I wanted to get some images of my trip while I was down there. I was bringing along my big beast but knew that I wouldn’t take it everywhere. While I was looking at some Canons & Nikon units I thought about my phone and how good the quality was for certain environments, key word, certain. I decided to forego the new rinky dink snapper and go CommaniPhone! I was pleased with a good portion of my images but of course a phone, even an Apple one, has it’s limitations. If you know what they are then you can easily get away with your iPhone an a vacation or trip. So, let’s get into it…

All in all, I’m pretty happy with the images I got from my phone. They can’t compare to my DSLR…

I’d say that if you know your shooting in good sun light you’ll be more than happy with the Iphone camera. If you know you’ll need some flash, then bring along a compact camera.

Deandra’s Sweet 16

I received a call from a very energetic and happy mother looking for info about her daughter Deandra’s upcoming 16 Birthday. We had a great conversation and she had some wonderful ideas about her party’s theme and what she was going to do. I was very excited when she booked me because I knew it was going to be a great event. We first setup a portrait photoshoot in Saddle River County Park & a few by her H.S.. Deandra’s mom said that Deandra was a bit nervous but I didn’t sense that at all during the shoot. Can you see nervousness in these images…

After the shoot Sandra, Deandra’s mom, had Trish over @ Thinking Paper come up with an awesome invitation for her ’80s themed party. Deandra’s birthday came a few weeks later and it was super cool! My buddy Chris Atwood over @ Absolute Event Services took care of the music and lighting. Give him a buzz if your looking for entertainment packages. The fiesta was held @ Macalusos in Hawthorne, NJ. Great venue with great food and better service! My 1st Commercial Gig…

OK. In keeping my New Years Resolution of a post a week AND not only pertaining to Photography. I give you this combination of storytime, techtime and phototime…

I guess it would be considered commercial. Here’s the backstory, *Storytime Alert* I covered an event for Temple University Alumni Club of NYC (scroll down to past events to see the images) last year when the Yanks Slapped the Phillies in the WS. My buddy Frank ‘The Banterer” Gallo went to TU and got me the gig. The images I took made it to the Temple Alumni Website and all was cool. Subsequently, they contacted me for another event which I covered and struck up a conversation with a dude who was checking out my new Nikon D700 body. He asked some fairly common questions about cameras and settings the likes of which I get pretty often, but then he busted out some more technically specific & complex questions about metering, lighting & file manipulation. I was taken back a bit but being a member of The DWF I was very open and honest to his questions and we talked for a good moment. He was grateful and asked me for my card. I thought nothing of it from there on.

Flash forward a few months and get an email from a communications management company in NYC needing some headshots of their management team of 12 people. They wanted to know my rates. Honestly, I had no idea what the going rate was for that kind of gig, so I called my go-to guy when I’m in need of good advice, Mr. Josh Lynn. He helped me propose a quote that would be competitive and benefit us both, the company and me, not JL who shoots about 50+ Weddings a year and lights candles in his home with $100 bills. Great guy that JL, a bit grumpy but that’s for a different post. Anyhow, they chose me over a few other people based on my work, quote and “ding-ding” my referral from the dude @ the Temple Event. I guess being nice paid off. I was pretty nervous but their creative team gave me an idea of what they wanted and then gave me free reign over the office for an afternoon. *Tech Alert* I used my D700 & 24-70 and 50 1.4. I used 2 SB-900s, both off-camera in iTTL commanded by the D700. Great thing that ability to control the flash output in-camera indoors. I shot the main 900 through the Lastolite EZBox Softbox & the rim light through a Honl Speed Snoot. The set-up worked pretty flawlessly indoors and I got some great images. I’m pretty happy with how they turned out. It gave me a different perspective on my photography and I got a chance to hang in Corporate America for a day. Cool gig but not for me. Although if I had to work somewhere that would be the place. Did I mention that my Assistant for that day has a band? They are pretty awesome. 1st post of 2011

Hello Folks. It’s been a while… This is officially my 1st post for 2011. Thankfully, I was pretty busy last year and unfortunately with facebook being so easy to use, my blog suffered a bit of neglect. However, after seeing the Social Network, and looking over some of the posts from last year, I realized I like the look & feel of my blog a bit more than my cold Facebook wall. Therefore, I’m going to try make more of an effort this year to add content to my blog. Due to my self diagnosed ADD though, It can’t only be about my work & images. I will throw in some thoughts, product reviews, videos, family stuff, opinions and may even attempt to throw in some personal and professional tips on stuff I think I do well. I figure, I am paying for unlimited hosting service, correct? There may be some bored souls out there who may actually even tune in and follow my mindless rants….well, then again…

So, are you still here?, as I sit here wide awake 3:20 in the morning with Alexa’s (my 3 year old daughter) arm across my forehead and barely clinging on to the edge of the bed as she methodically pushes my off, I start my New Year’s Resolution of @ least 1 post per week. I have about 20+ events from last year that need to make their way on here so I foresee a “best of” highlight coming shortly. How did she get in here again? I already brought her back twice! Well, the brightside is if she continues to wake me up in the middle of the night, I may keep my resolution…

Did I mentioned it snowed today? I mean since we’re talking about 1sts…
